America Japan Sheet Glass Company, a joint venture between Libbey Owens Sheet Glass and Sumitomo, obtains technology from the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company of the United States to produce flat glass using the Colburn process.

After years of growth and establishing a new manufacturing plant, the company changes its name to Nippon Sheet Glass., Ltd. Over time, NSG perfects the Colburn process and expands its capabilities.
1968
1978

Through developing advanced glass chemistries and defining new manufacturing processes, NSG is the first company to successfully achieve a Gradient Index (GRIN) distribution in a glass rod.

NSG patents this GRIN technology by introducing a new self-focusing lens and trademarks the brand SELFOC® Unlike conventional optics which manipulates light via curved surfaces, the SELFOC lens focuses light and transmits images via a simple, flat surface. NSG' new technology revolutionizes optics.

NSG America is incorporated to sell SELFOC Micro Lenses in North America. NSG America recognizes the potential of the SELFOC lens and pioneers its entry into the medical, office equipment and telecommunications marketplaces. Demand skyrockets and NSG America becomes the undisputed market leader and the preeminent global micro-lens supplier.

NSG Europe is established to spread world wide sales of the SELFOC Micro Lens. Aggressive sales and marketing campaigns around the world make NSG the lens of choice in the telecommunications marketplace and helps enable the vast growth of the industry.
